Advice from BHS’s National Merit Scholars

February 16, 2011

Bozeman High School has 9 National Merit Honors Scholars this year and Petra Academy has one.  Congratulations, gang!

So what advice did these stellar students – who placed in the top 1% nationwide on the PSAT test – offer up to younger students?

  1. Read a lot
  2. Take challenging college-level Advanced Placement (AP) courses
  3. Do speech and debate because it “teaches you how to think, how to work, how to argue convincingly.”

What’s the big deal about being a National Merit Honors Scholar?

  1. It helps you get into a top college, as they know you’re one of the best students in the country.
  2. Some colleges offer scholarships to National Merit Scholars, ranging from $2500 to a full ride – tuition, room and board.  (My son is currently at the University of Oklahoma on a big National Merit Scholarship, where he lives on a special floor reserved for NMHS Scholars.  OU likes to brag that it has attracted more National Merit Scholars than any other public university in the country.)

You can read more about Bozeman’s scholars in the Bozeman Daily Chronicle.
