Summer Stimulation

April 17, 2011

Stimulating gifted children’s brains during summer vacation is important.

Why?  Because, for many gifted students, their most exciting learning opportunities may take place over the summer.   For those whose schools do not have cluster grouping or GT-only classes, a summer program for gifted children may be a child’s only chance to socialize with his or her intellectual peers….people who “get” him.

We’ll try to help you find or create stimulating summer experiences for your children.  We’ll highlight local and regional opportunities.  If your children are old enough, you may also want to consider some of the nation-wide sleep-away camps.

You can learn more about how to pick a summer program and search for some of the national and regional camps on our Enrichment page.  We’ve highlighted a few local and regional programs in this month’s articles; keep checking back for more.  And feel free to send us your recommendations!

When do you need to start looking?  The more competitive national programs – generally those for high school students –  have applications deadlines starting in February!

If you need financial help with paying for summer camp, Montana AGATE awards cash scholarships to G/T students in grades 1-12.  Scholarship winners in grades 1, 2 & 3 will be awarded $200; students in grades 4-12 will be awarded $400 to use towards an educational opportunity of their choice.  Applications must be postmarked by 3/19/11.
