Resources for Parents

January 29, 2012

A powerful result of having a speaker like Jim Delisle address a room full of people is becoming aware that your experiences with your child and his or her development are perhaps not totally unique; realizing that you are not alone. The job of raising gifted children is not always easy!

The Bozeman School District’s PEAKS Program has some parenting resources to loan to parents.  Some titles and authors that families have found helpful are:

  • Standing Up for Your Gifted Child, Joan Franklin Smutny, Free Spirit Publishing
  • Keys to Parenting the Gifted Child, Sylvia Rimm, Great Potential Press, Inc.
  • Bringing out the Best, Jacqulyn Saunders and Pamela Espeland, Free Spirit Publishing
  • The Survival Guide for Parents of Gifted Kids, Sally Yahnke Walker, Free Spirit Publishing
  • Parenting Gifted Kids: Tips for Raising Happy and Successful Children, James Delisle, Free Spirit Publishing
  • Helping Gifted Children Soar:  A Practical Guide for Parents and Teachers, Carol Ann Strip, Gifted Psychology Press, Inc.
  • Living with Intensity, Susan Daniels and Michael Piechowski, Great Potential Press, Inc.

To borrow one of these books, contact Wendy Morical in the PEAKS office (522-6016).

Good resources for parents can also be found through the specialty publishing houses:

  • Prufrock Press dedicates a section of their catalog to parenting gifted children.
  • Free Spirit Publishing is a wide-ranging house, covering many issues related to social and emotional growth; giftedness is one.
  • Great Potential Press is another important source of many materials on nurturing gifts and supporting your child.
