Summer Camps for Year-Round Learners

April 13, 2015

A parent from the Bozeman Schools, Laurie White, passed on the following information:

The time of year is here for the summer camp planning and registration rush.  There are many wonderful choices for active minds from expensive and week long to free or low cost classes.  A few that might pique the interest of your elementary age children are:

  • Camp Invention at the Children’s Museum of Bozeman (which is great because there are loads of spaces still available and you can sign up as late as the end of May).  Also, the new STEAM lab at CMB is offering camps, clubs and classes.  Most camps are posted for the slightly older elementary age, but, there are several short classes for all age groups including the very interesting Coding Club for Girls and a class for adults STEAM & Suds to help you acquire “the tools you need to understand and support your child’s interest in 21st century technologies: Coding, Arduino, 3D printing, etc.”
  • Museum of the Rockies week long camps are back including old favorites and a few new ones such as Famous Experiments where campers reconstruct some of the greatest experiments of all time… Galileo, Pasteur, Pascal, etc., and STEM on Two Wheels where campers examine the science behind bicycles while cycling Bozeman.  Sign up quick though, camps are filling fast.
  • The Bozeman Public Library will offer ½ day camps, clubs and classes again this summer.  They are still completing their programming, but they will likely host another 4H Robotics ½ day camp with Gregg Switzer (4H Robotics resumes again in the fall with signup on Oct 1), a STEM Day with several STEM activities and the Crazy 8’s Math Club.  Check their children’s activities calendar the end of the month for the summer schedule.
  • For something really different, why not check out Chinese Summer Camp hosted by Bozeman Mandarin Chinese.  China is the most populous country in the world, is the second fastest growing world economy (after India) and has aggressive investment in space exploration, industry, energy, export of goods and development of services.  Our children have much to gain from exposure to diversity that will be an every day part of their future.
  • YMCA STEM Camp for 3rd – 5th grade featuring Coding, Aviation and Engineering.  Also many traditional camps of course.
  • MOSS (Montana Outdoor Science School) offering an array of outdoor science oriented programming.

If you know of any that would feed the active mind of an elementary age gifted child, please share with the group.  Together we can satiate the deep craving for knowledge and mental challenge our children have and help them find the balance they need.  Thanks and hold on for Summer!
